Bunny Truffles are a quick and easy no bake treat with few ingredients that make the perfect bite-sized reward for our furry friends. Made with a blend of pellets and banana, these truffles are not only delicious but also packed with healthy nutrients that rabbits need. Just mix the ingredients together, shape them into small balls, and surprise your fluffy companion!
We all know rabbits love a good treat and they would eat them all day long if they were allowed to! Treats though should be limited to 1-2 tbls a day. Ideally they should consist of fresh or dried fruit, veggies, flowers or herbs and given as a reward for good behavior or when training your bun.
So what kind and where to buy them is often a dilemma for new rabbit parents. Yes, the big box stores are convenient and inexpensive, but did you know that most of those treats are not good for a rabbit? Many mass produced treats are full of fillers such as corn and added sugars which are not good for a rabbit’s fragile digestive system. Take a look at the ingredient list on the containers…you probably won’t be able to say half of the ingredients nor know what exactly they are.
I like to buy treats from small entrepreneurs not only to support small businesses, but they put so much love and care into their products. The only problem is that sometimes I run out of treats before a new shipment arrives! I know right! (What a bad bun mum) Having a recipe on hand like these bunny truffles are a good alternative than buying store-bought ones. Bunny Truffles will still allow you to reward your bunny’s good behavior or simply treat them for being adorable and your bunny will be delighted to indulge in this wholesome homemade treat!
How to Make Bunny Truffles
With just a few simple steps and ingredients, you can create these bite-sized bunny truffles that your friend will gobble right up!
Ingredients
- Pellets (I use about 1/4 cup)
- water
- 1/2 banana
- 2-3 freeze dried apple slices
Note: I don’t have exact measurements on the pellets. You can make whatever quantity you like. If you are making a larger batch of pellets, you can add more banana, if you want to make just one or two then use less pellets and banana.
Directions
- Place the pellets in a bowl and pour a bit of water over the top to moisten. Let sit for approximately 20 minutes (you may have to let it sit a little longer depending on the pellet you have). Once the pellets are soaked through and have swelled a bit, mash them with a fork. It should be the consistency of wet sand. If your mixture feels too dry, add more water in small increments.
2. While you are waiting for the pellets to soften, mash the banana in another bowl. When the pellets are ready, add the banana. Thoroughly combine the 2 ingredients.
3. In a third bowl, crush the freeze dried apples as fine as you can. Using a spoon or small melon baller, roll the pellet-banana mixture into bite size balls. Then coat the truffles in the apples.
4. Place these in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or so to firm up or you can serve right away. These will last in the refrigerator for several days.
Tips For Bunny Truffles
Grind up some pellets and keep them on hand in a tightly lidded jar. This will cut out the time needed for the water to break down the pellets.
Some rabbits don’t like bananas… my Winter was not a fan. I keep canned pure pumpkin and no sugar added organic applesauce on hand. You can even keep a jar or two of organic baby food in your bunny pantry.
To switch it up, you could add dried flowers or herbs to either the pellet mix or the coating. Not only would they be really pretty, but they would add another healthy component to your treat.
If you have a sick bunny and you are having a hard time feeding them, you can substitute the pellets with Oxbow critical care or Sherwood Recovery Food. Make a single serving to see if they will take it.
Final Thoughts…
Rabbits should only be given treats on occasion.
