Welcome to My Journey

From rabbit lover to educator this is my ever evolving journey down the rabbit hole into the world of Lagomorphs! Hello and welcome to TDR! I’m Hillary, bun mom to 8 over the past 18 years. I love rabbits, cooking, interior design, organizing, reading and research.

Upon retirement as an elementary teacher aide, I was trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life. After some self reflection, it became clear that I wanted to help rabbits. Not quite sure how, I looked to my strengths and meditated for guidance. Then it clicked and within a day I had an outline of my vision. That is how The Domesticated Rabbit was born.

Like many rabbit owners, I started my journey with more questions than answers. What began as a curiosity about these fascinating creatures quickly turned into a passion for learning everything I could about their care and well-being. The more I discovered, the more I realized how much misinformation there was out there. That’s when I decided to share my knowledge and experiences through The Domesticated Rabbit. This site is my way of guiding fellow rabbit lovers on their own journeys, with trusted advice and authentic insights I wish I had when I first started down the rabbit hole.

My goal is simple: educate, advocate and celebrate pet rabbits. Spreading awareness of  responsible pet rabbit ownership,  educating on topics such as behavior, care, diet and health and celebrating rabbits and their owners who go above and beyond in their care are a priority. I have found google, FB & IG groups, as well as Pinterest to all have a wealth of information albeit some good, some not so good. I don’t profess to know all as I think everyone can and should continually research and learn, but I aim to provide a space where rabbit owners or future owners can go to find answers without having to do a bunch of legwork.

Our first rabbit, Chester,  lived 12 1/2 years as an only bun. After he hopped the rainbow bridge in 2020, I started  volunteering at our local rabbit sanctuary Hop on Home and this is when my own personal rabbit education really began. Looking back on the years we spent with Chester, I can honestly admit there was so much I did not know. Advances in medical research yield new treatments.  More awareness is coming forward in the plight of abandoned and neglected domesticated rabbits. Education is the seed that will help grow the hope of a better tomorrow for our rabbits.

My hope along this journey is to inspire you to give your bunny his or her best life…after all A House Is Not A Home Without A rabbit!

Thanks for joining my fluffle,

Hillary
