Our Story
Hello and welcome to TDR! I’m Hillary, bun mom to 8 over the past 16 years. I love bunnies, cooking, interior design, organizing, reading and research.
After retiring from a career as an elementary teacher aide, I was trying to decide what I wanted to do next. I looked to my interests and asked myself “What can I do with these?” I started out with a cooking and lifestyle blog, learning the technological side of things, but after a while my heart was not in it…it was with my bunnies and then it became clear. Within a day I had an outline of my vision and that is how The Domesticated Rabbit was born.
My goal is to spread awareness of pet rabbit ownership and educate on topics such as proper care and diet. I have found google, FB groups, IG groups, Pinterest to all have a wealth of information over the years, some good, some not so good. I don’t profess to know all as I think everyone can and should continually research and learn, but I aim to provide a space where bunny owners can go to help find answers to their questions without having to do a bunch of legwork.
Our first rabbit lived 12 1/2 years as an only bun. After he hopped the rainbow bridge 3 1/2 years ago, I started to volunteer at our local rabbit sanctuary giving demonstrations on DIY healthy rabbit treats, writing the monthly newsletter, participating in fundraising events and working at the shelter. This is when my own personal rabbit education really started. Looking back there was so much I did not know with our first bunny and I find myself still continually learning. New situations arise, new medical research yields new treatments and more awareness is coming to the forefront of the plight of abandoned and neglected domesticated rabbits.
I hope to inspire you to give your bunny its best life…after all A House Is Not A Home Without A Bunny!
